One of the most incredible and beautiful churches in the world is located in the south of Spain, in the town of Seville. One of the largest churches in the world, and an incredible example of Gothic architecture resides in this cultural paradise in the country of Spain.
It was built at a time, when the town was incredibly prosperous, and the town leaders decided they would flaunt their riches through the building of the most spectacular church they could come up with. If their intention was to show everyone how passionate they were about their vision, then they have indeed succeeded.
If only the original structural design was on pair with the founding visionaries passion for creating the church. Within about five years of its completion, the main dome collapsed, and major repair work had to be done. Apparently though the repair work was much better then the original construction, and it lasted for about another three hundred years, until it collapsed once more. It would have been a little difficult to blame the second collapse on the artisans and trades people of the time, as it was an earthquake that finally brought down the dome. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of damage to the contents below as well.
It took over a hundred years to build the church originally. At the time many devotees of the church donated half their salaries to fund the design and construction of the cathedral. To me that's an incredible sign of devotion and commitment by the people of the time. Considering the original people involved in the project wouldn't even live to see it's completion. I can't ever imagine something like that happening in this day and age.
If your even in the town of Seville, you should be sure to make a visit to see this incredible old church. Personally, viewing old architecture is one of my favorite things to do when traveling around the world. It doesn't matter what city I go to, whether it's in the new world city of Philadelphia, or somewhere very old world like the town of Seville Spain. There's so much, that old buildings tell us about the people of the time it was built. The details and intricacies of buildings tell us something about the people who designed and built them in the first place. Have fun reading a few more stores around the site, as I plan to take you on a virtual walking tour of this old cathedral, and maybe you too can learn something about a time and peoples long since passed.
